Some Background
“How did you get to do it?”
I was born in New York City and raised, mostly, in California, I had an early interest in radio, back in the last years of “The Golden Age” before Television overtook it as a story telling medium. As a kid, I was also an avid photographer and reader. I started college at UC Santa Barbara in the English department. I also became a writer and photographer for the University newspaper. This led to a volunteer job as a “campus radio reporter” for a weekly show on a local AM radio station, which led to part time work on the week-end ” Late Shift.” With a little help from the station manager I learned to talk on the radio.
After two years at UCSB I transferred to UCLA’s Theater Arts Department - Motion Picture Division (now known as the School of Theater, Film, and Television.) After my university days I served two years in the US Naval Office of Information, as a film editor. Other duties included cinematography and reading “temporary” narrations for the editors to determine the timing of their cuts. Our commanding officer liked the sound of the “temp tracks” and they became “permanent” narrations used in the final films.
Returning to California I free-lanced in various cinematic crafts and at one point was acting in a series of one-act plays where a fellow cast member introduced me to his commercial agent, the great Herb Tannen, who signed me and directed me away from a series of part-time jobs in film making into a full-time profession as a performer. In one way or another I have been a voice actor ever since.
Many thanks to all of you who have educated and encouraged me (and continue to guide me) down this wonderful path.
A Story
“Where do jobs come from?”:
In 1998 I recorded a series of narrations for a video game called "Baldur's Gate". It was the first complex video game based on "Dungeons and Dragons" and it quickly became a runaway best-seller. I narrated most of the "mods" which is game talk for animated modules - small stories. A sample of these narrations appears on my Voice Samples page.
Just last week I was contacted by a young independent music producer in Romania who tracked me down on the web. "Baldur" remains his favorite video game 17 years after its creation. He asked me to record a narration for his latest CD. Stay tuned.
